On Good Fortune

All fortune is good fortune; for it either rewards, disciplines, mends, or punishes, and so is either useful or just.” On The Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius (Note 1)

It should be noted that fortune and providence are not the same things. Fortune is an unknown and unpredictable phenomenon that causes an event to result one way rather than another. Providence is the manifestation of God’s foresightful guardianship over His Creation.

Note 1: Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius was a Roman senator, consul, magister officiorum, and philosopher of the early 6th century.
