Water or Wine?

Jesus’s first public miracle came at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11). His mother and His disciples were with him at the wedding. Weddings were festive, multi-day celebrations. The bridegroom was responsible for food and libations. Social reputations could be won or lost on the quality and quantity. And perish the thought of running out of either one.

But at this wedding they ran out of wine. I can almost hear the Holy Spirit chuckling. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

So, in His first public miracle, Jesus turned water into wine. From the dialogue it seems obvious that He had performed “private” miracles, and that His mother was quite aware of His ability.

So what lessons to take away from this wedding scene? There are several. Here are two:

Whenever God does something there is a role for you. Go fill the water jars. This was no easy task. Six jugs. 150 – 200 gallons of water. Heavy. Go to well. Lots of effort. Often we do not experience the miraculous because we are not prepared to do our part. Step up. Take part in His movement. Secondly, turning water into wine demonstrated God is into replacement and abundance.

So, here is the question. Where in my life do I need replacement or abundance? What needs to be given up for replacement by God. Destructive behavior, heart of stone, bad habits? Turn them over to God. Where do I need abundance today? Relationships with kids? Finances? What needs to grow to abundance rather than scarcity?

Now go do your part.
