On Idolatry

…. if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 ESV

“Genesis and Exodus capture the ongoing human condition with fierce accuracy. God invites us to be stewards of creation. We would rather have lordship. God asks us to trust and love him. We would rather be godlike ourselves. God frees the Israelites from Egypt, taking the treasure of the Egyptians with them. They use it to make a blasphemous replacement for him. The story is always the same. Our idols today take many more disguised and subtle forms than a golden calf. But they can’t give us what we crave from them. We turn to them so that life will be easier, but our appetites and addictions are more demanding gods than God himself. In the words of the Psalmist, those who make idols become like them, senseless and dead (Ps 115:8). Our freedom from the fire of God’s love turns to ash in our mouths. Thankfully, God doesn’t let the story end there.” (Things Worth Dying For, Charles J. Chaput)

It does not matter whether you are a religious believer or a committed atheist. All humans worship something. And as for you? You can worship The Creator. Or you can worship something of your own making.

Choose wisely.
