We are considering the question “If you knew Jesus was returning tomorrow, what would you do differently today?” Here, for context, is the inspired Word of God written by Paul, somewhere between Corinth and Jerusalem, circa 57 AD:
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For the truth about God is known to them instinctively; God has put this knowledge in their hearts. Since earliest times men have seen the earth and sky and all God made, and have known of his existence and great eternal power. So they will have no excuse when they stand before God at Judgment Day.
Yes, they knew about Him all right, but they wouldn’t admit it or worship Him, or even thank Him for all His daily care. And after a while they began to think up silly ideas of what God was like and what He wanted them to do. The result was that their foolish minds became dark and confused. Claiming themselves to be wise without God, they became utter fools instead. (Note 1)
So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things amongst themselves. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshipped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. Romans 1:18-25 Adapted, Emphasis added.
If this passage tells us anything, it is that when a nation willfully rejects God and His Word, turning its back on His moral requirements, God eventually reveals His wrath against that nation. God has a long track record of wrath against ungodly nations. This passage reveals that one way God reveals His wrath is by allowing the people of that nation to experience the full brunt of the ravaging consequences of their sin.
Selah.
Note 1: For the reverence and fear of God are basic to all wisdom. Knowing God results in every other kind of understanding. Proverbs 9:10 TLB
