On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never to be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give Him no rest until He establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth. Isaiah 62:6-7 ESV
The voice of your watchmen – they lift up their voice; together they sing for joy; for eye to eye they see the return of the Lord to Zion. Isaiah 52:8 ESV
The Prophet Isaiah emphasizes the importance of watchmen. It is a God-ordained role. There are spiritual watchmen and watchmen on the wall. Spiritual watchmen (shepherds, rabbis, etc.) were charged with safeguarding the spiritual life of God’s people. Stationed on high walls or in watchtowers, watchmen on the wall were lookouts charged with watching for surprise enemy attacks and other incoming dangers, and for the the joyous sight of the return of the Lord.
All Believers are to be watchmen, guarding our souls and those of others, and keeping watch for the return of Jesus Christ.
Be a watchman on the wall.
