The Next Generation

Anne Graham Lotz has penned a beautiful devotional entitled Fixing My Eyes On Jesus. Here, reprinted in its enterity, is her message from February 18:

I’ll keep at it until I’m old and gray. God, don’t walk off and leave me until I get out the news of your strong right arm to this world, news of your power to the world yet to come. Psalm 71:18 MSG

Any relay runner with expertise will tell you that winning the race depends not only on speed but on skillfully passing the baton to the next runner. Are you passing the baton? In the race of life, the baton is the truth that leads to personal faith in God. Each generation receives the baton from the previous generation, and each must pass it on smoothly and securely to the next.

Every day we see advances in longer life spans and expanding knowledge in all kinds of fields. But with all the progress and sophistication, our world is bankrupt of moral and spiritual values. And that moral and spiritual bankruptcy threatens to erode our very existence.

The Bible tells us that God “decreed statutes . . . which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children” (Psalm 78:5–6).

In the midst of wickedness and waste, pass the baton of truth that leads to personal faith in God to someone in the next generation.
