The Sabbath As A Spiritual Discipline

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

The act of keeping the Sabbath, of following the Fourth Commandment, is a fast, not so much from food, but from temporal things. We abstain from our ordinary and necessary work. We turn off the phone and the computer in order to silence their constant demands for our attention. A fast to draw closer to our Maker, to honor His majesty.

The aim of this effort is to create an atmosphere that will allow space for God. To create an environment that allows for our own awareness of God. God is always present with us. It is our preoccupation with the necessities and otherwise of life that often distract us from Him.

The Sabbath is God’s provision for man. Practicing the Sabbath introduces a different rhythm into our lives; a holy, God-centered, rhythm. It renews us. It reminds us that we are entirely dependent on Him. And that we are interconnected with each other in that dependence.

So here’s the fasting spiritual discipline application. No email. No telephone. No texting. No worries.

Shabbat Shalom.
